Courses
The Pasteur Foundation Asia is committed to support transmission of knowledge from the very best researchers to curious students from around the world.
Through international training, unique cross-discipline interactions, and hands-on experience, HKU-Pasteur Research Pole provides students, young scientists and health professionals with consistent knowledge.
HKU-Pasteur Research Pole has pioneered in Hong Kong the organization of advanced Master Classes for postgraduate students and young investigators. Since the creation of the first HKU-Pasteur Virology Course in 2004, around 1,000 students from all over the world have been trained.
In close synergy with the University of Hong Kong and the Institut Pasteur, HKU-Pasteur Research Pole has established a Centre of Excellence for Teaching and Training in Biomedical Research for postgraduate students, preferentially from the University of Hong Kong, the Institut Pasteur International network and Asian universities.
The courses include : | |

Diseases of Interest
Hong Kong is a travel-hub situated at an epicenter of zoonotic and pandemic emergence and, therefore, particularly challenged by those emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases. Scientists at HKU-PRP are implementing innovative research programs to confront the challenges posed by viral infections and promote a “One-Health” approach to the understanding of infectious diseases.
Influenza is a major threat to global public health. HKU-PRP’s work aims at understanding the viral, host and environmental determinants of influenza virus transmission between human beings, and from animals to humans. |
Over the past decade two novel coronaviruses have caused outbreaks threatening global health security: severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus and Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV). HKU-PRP is investigating the prevalence of MERS-CoV infection to monitor virus spread and evolution. |
Each year there are ~50 million of new dengue cases and is becoming endemic in neighboring Guangdong province. In the absence of vaccine and drugs, with the prospect of further climate changes affecting the ecology of the mosquito vector, HKU-PRP is pursuing an original approach to reveal the mechanisms of viral pathogenesis. |
HKU-PRP is also developing research projects on the mosquito-borne, Zika virus, whose recent outbreaks led WHO to promulgate a declaration of Public Health Emergency of International Concern. Investigations of virus-host interactions using a comprehensive proteomics-based approach can pave the way to the identification of cellular targets for therapeutic compounds. |

The Institut Pasteur
Founded in 1887 by Louis Pasteur, the Institut Pasteur is a private, non-profit foundation whose mission is to help prevent and treat diseases, mainly those of infectious origin, through biomedical research, teaching, and public health initiatives.
The Institut Pasteur is a leading international research institute based in Paris (France), which operates in a highly international context, with a network of 33 centres throughout the world; it has four large public interest missions: research, education, public health, and development of scientific innovation to society via technology transfer and industrial partnerships.
The first Institut Pasteur site outside of France was established in 1891. Since then, the Institut Pasteur International Network has expanded to comprise 32 additional sites across the five continents in 26 countries, 7 of which are in Asia, The HKU-Pasteur Research Pole is the main hub of the Institut Pasteur International Network in Asia.
The Institut Pasteur is true to its vocation: to draw inspiration for its research from fundamental questions in medicine and public health and, in turn, to apply the results of this research to the well-being of society at large, promoting a “One-Health” approach. It is also a great centre of learning, whose training shines throughout the world thanks to the programs of the Institut Pasteur International Network. The Institut Pasteur and the Institut Pasteur International Network are among the most successful organizations in linking with industrial partners to translate newly generated knowledge into technology products to enhance health (ranked #15 among the world’s most innovative research institutions in 2017 according to Reuters).

HKU-Pasteur Research Pole
The HKU-Pasteur Research Pole (HKU-PRP) was formed as a joint laboratory between the University of Hong Kong and the Institut Pasteur in 1999. HKU-PRP was integrated into the School of Public Health of the Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine of the University of Hong Kong in 2013. HKU-PRP goal is to generate biological knowledge to better understand and treat infectious diseases by bringing together scientists with an interdisciplinary mind.
By its strategic location HKU-PRP is well placed to be at the forefront of an early warning and response to emerging diseases threats. Its research strategy has focused on the generation of biological knowledge to confront the challenges posed by viral infections and provide solutions to treat infectious diseases.
How | do viruses infect us? |
---|---|
What | makes a microbe pathogenic? |
How | do pathogens withstand our defenses? |
Understanding basic mechanisms of virus biology is essential to deliver new “druggable” targets to mitigate the impact of infectious diseases.
HKU-PRP provides superb opportunities and support for outstanding young scientists to achieve excellence in fundamental research and its applications. It also provide a common space for shared technology, methods, expertise, resources to facilitate access to technological innovations for research institutes based in resource-limited countries.
